Institutional statement on the use of research animals
AnaPath Research S.A.U. has become part of the Transparency Agreement on the use of animals in scientific experimentation in Spain developed by the Confederation of Scientific Organizations and Societies of Spain (COSCE) in collaboration with the European Animal Research Association (EARA) and launched on 20 September 2016.
Animal experimentation plays a fundamental role in discovering the biological mechanisms underlying disease and in developing medical treatments. Without research animals, we would not have most of the medicines, antibiotics, vaccines, or surgical techniques that are currently used in human and veterinary medicine.
A significant part of the research undertaken at AnaPath Research S.A.U. to contribute to improving human health and wellbeing is made possible thanks to our use of research animals and includes general toxicology, developmental and reproductive toxicology, safety pharmacology and PD models, among others.
The welfare of research animals is of paramount importance to AnaPath Research S.A.U. and we enforce strict compliance with and respect for current legislation on the protection of animals used in research and for other scientific purposes, including education. We strive for the highest standards in animal welfare, not only from an acute moral responsibility to do so, but also from a deep conviction that we cannot achieve research excellence without animal welfare. Our experiments with animals rigorously follow legal standards and are fully assessed by our Animal Experimentation Ethics Committee, which always encourages us to explore the use of alternative methods, to reduce the number of animals used and to refine the experimental protocols applied. Not a single research project requiring the use of animals may commence without a suitable and obligatory ethics committee assessment and later authorization by the competent authority.
Animal welfare is fundamental in our company and though it primarily applies to animal care and handling, we consider it a reference point in all the services we offer.
AnaPath Research S.A.U. makes every effort to ensure that the personnel involved in animal care and the researchers involved in animal experimentation have the requisite education and necessary professional competence and that all needed resources including suitable facilities, husbandry, and veterinary care are provided to correctly safeguard our research animals.
